The Nation’s First AGZA Green Zone® High School
“Yerba Buena High School is honored to be selected as AGZA’s first green zone high school in the country. This effort complements our environmentally focused curricula in our engineering and architecture academies. I am grateful for the hard work put forth from our district, our school, and AGZA.”

OVERVIEW
Yerba Buena High School has established the first AGZA Green Zone®High School in the nation! This groundbreaking advancement adds to the ongoing sustainability leadership at YBHS. By transitioning from noisy, highly polluting gas machinery to low-noise zero-emission tools and operations, the high school will eliminate smog-forming emissions and greenhouse gasses from routine grounds maintenance while also dramatically reducing noise levels, solid and toxic waste streams, and ongoing operational cost.
AGZA’s goal is to help YBHS and the entire East Side Union High School District (ESUHSD) maximize its investment in sustainable equipment, operations and crew. AGZA Green Zone Certification ensures your electric operations are safe, stable, effective, and profitable. The AGZA Green Zone at YBHS will be a model for low-impact land maintenance that can be scaled to the other ten high schools in ESUHSD and inspire other schools across the country.

“ESUHSD is proud to collaborate with AGZA as it highlights our continued commitment in providing a healthy and safe environment to students, staff, and community members.”
Roger Silveira, Director of Facilities, Maintenance & Operations

DATA
Every year the AGZA Green Zone prevents over four tons (4.38t) of airborne pollution from land care operations at YBHS, while reducing noise levels 40% - 70%. Fuel spillage, evaporative emissions and solid waste from gas maintenance have been completely eliminated. Significant reductions in hourly operational costs from the gas fleet — fuel, oil, parts, and maintenance — will achieve a healthy ROI on the new electric fleet, and ongoing savings thereafter.
Toxic Gases | Amount Removed |
---|---|
TOTAL AIRBORNE POLLUTANTS eliminated | = 8,760 lb (4.38 tons) |
CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2) eliminated | = 6,483 lb (3.24 tons) |
CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) eliminated | = 1,912 lb (0.96 tons) |
HYDROCARBONS (HC) eliminated | = 294 lb |
PARTICULATE MATTER (PM 2.5) eliminated | = 61 lb |
NITROGEN OXIDES (NOx) eliminated | = 11 lb |
NOISE REDUCTION | = 40%-70% |
FUEL, OIL and GAS-RELATED PARTS | = 100% eliminated |
MAINTENANCE TIME and COSTS | = dramatically reduced |
OPERATIONAL COSTS | = dramatically reduced |
COMMUNITY SUSTAINABILITY AWARENESS | = raised |
“Roger Silveira is one of the most forward-thinking facilities managers AGZA has worked with. Roger partnered with AGZA to ensure the sustainability initiatives of his school district are leveraged as teachable moments for staff, student body, and surrounding communities.”
